False Sense of Security The sun is shining, the days are long, and the beach, lake, and mountains beckon. The excitement of warm weather and promise of vacation coupled with the seemingly ideal summer driving conditions can lull drivers into a false sense of security. In fact, a Michelin study on driver safety found that 74% of drivers believe that less accidents happen during the summer. However, summer roads are not quite as safe as they seem. Summer Dangers The summer months are actually among the most dangerous on the roads and precisely because of that sense of security that warm weather and clear roads bring. As drivers lower their guard, they tend to relax their driving standards, becoming less vigilant than they might be in the snow or rain. The results can be deadly. Car crashes are often at their highest during the summer months while recent data showed August as second to highest for fatal crashes while July and August were among the highest of the year for crash injuries.  Nature's Traffic Calming Making sure that cars are traveling at safe speeds and that drivers stay alert is important all year long. But for much of the year, nature does her part to keep drivers on their toes. While the perils of distracted driving beckon drivers all year long, conditions like snowy roads, pouring rain, or slippery leaves can be enough to urge drivers to focus on the road ahead. In the summertime, when roads are clear and the sun is often shining bright, it becomes the job of cities, more than ever, to find ways to keep drivers alert and calm traffic. Man-Made Effort Nature has the right idea by creating changing road conditions to keep drivers focused. In fact, the earliest traffic calming configurations were made precisely to make driving more challenging in order to stop speeding. Physical devices such as speed humps or cushions compel drivers to focus on navigating their cars carefully. Case Highlight: South Carolina Ports

Case Highlight: South Carolina Ports Targeted Photo Speeds The South Carolina Port Authority is one of the fastest growing major ports in the US with over $150 million of cargo passing through daily. To improve accountability for trucks traveling in and out of the port, a gate entry system takes a photo of each truck’s equipment. The challenge is that photos can only be captured at 8- 12 mph. When trucks don’t reach the target speed, they slow the cargo delivery process and create needless traffic by circling back for a second try.   In Search of the Perfect Solution For a solution to work to address the truck speed issue, several features were imperative. The Ports Authority needed to be able to regulate truck speed, notify incoming trucks of speeds, message drivers to slow down or speed up, inform drivers when they should maintain their speeds, and be completely programmable from office in Charleston, SC to any port in the state. Innovative Speed Sign The innovative SafePace 700 sign offered a unique array of options that was a perfect fit for the South Carolina Ports. The full matrix of LEDs allows for display of driver speed, text messages, or a combination of both. The SafePace Cloud allows for remote access of the signs from anywhere with internet. With the pilot program in Greer, SC, over 200 miles away from Port offices, this offered the flexibility to regulate truck speeds at the port. Is Education Enough? The SafePace 700 signs have been installed at ports in Greer, SC with plans to install more in Charleston and at other state ports. With extra large 18” digits for improved visibility and flashing strobes, drivers can clearly see their speeds and be warned when exceeding thresholds. Driver responsive messaging can be programmed to alert drivers to slow down, speed up, or maintain speed. All programming and data downloads can be done seamlessly from anywhere with internet via SafePace Cloud.

Education Before Enforcement

Education Before Enforcement Deterring Speeders There’s a common misconception that speed laws and police officers are out to get drivers, conspiring to slap them with tickets they don’t deserve. In fact, speed laws are enacted to keep people safe and are carefully calculated taking each street’s environment in mind. Police officers far prefer that drivers obey laws and drive safely than ticket them for speeding. For that reason, speed trailers and display signs are rapidly growing as a tool for police departments to educate drivers and remind them to slow down.   Why Bother Educating? Effective traffic calming, that is slowing of vehicles to safe speeds, almost always involves the three Es- Education, Engineering, and Enforcing. Simply ticketing drivers may be revenue-producing but that’s not the end goal of police departments. Educating drivers is the first, and most important, step to safer roads. Billboards and educational campaigns are effective ways to educate while speed trailers have the advantage of catching drivers in the moment as well as the ability to personalize messages to each driver. How Speed Trailers Educate Speed display signs provide a multi-pronged approach to driver education. They are mounted along with speed limit signs so that drivers see a comparison of the posted speed limit and their own speeds. Speeds are displayed highly visible LED digits so that drivers are aware of what their speeds are. Both the digits and the sign strobes can flash at drivers who exceed set speeds to alert them that they are speeding. Many signs also offer the option to display driver responsive messaging such as “Slow Down” or “Too Fast”. Is Education Enough? For most drivers, the reminder that they need to slow down is sufficient to change behaviors and encourage safer speeds. In fact, studies have shown that most drivers, as many as 70%, do slow down at radar signs. However, a well-rounded, effective traffic calming program should also take Engineering and Enforcement into account. Engineering can be done with street narrowing or physical devices such as speed humps or lane separators while enforcement is something every city has its own approach to.
