When Safe Roads Become Unsafe

On roads where there are generally not safety concerns, weather can present unique challenges. With increased friction in bad weather, vehicles are more likely to travel too fast and collisions become more frequent.

In the city of Lethbridge, ON, the municipality used the SafePace 550 variable speed limit sign to simply change the speed limit in bad weather. The SafePace 550 displays the speed limit and can be programmed to change based on weather reports or even in the moment when weather takes an unexpected turn for the worse.

The signs were installed on a roadways with average daily traffic of 50,000 vehicles and a long history of weather related collisions including multi car pileups.

The SafePace 550 was used in conjunction with the SafePace Cloud to program the sign remotely as well as to gather data and record traffic statistics. The sign proved a powerful tool in lowering vehicle speed limits, and remarkably, there were no collisions reported at all during weather events when the speed was reduced.

Safer Roads After Dark

Night Driving Winter is in full swing and while the shortest of its days are behind us, many more lie ahead. Driving in the dark always has its perils but on winter days, people spend even more time driving in the dark. Depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision are all compromised when driving at night. Even with well-lit roads, visibility at night is more difficult than during daylight. In rural areas, night time driving is even more challenging with long stretches of road that are often insufficiently lit.  Night Perils  In addition to visibility issues, night driving has additional challenges. Fatigue becomes more common in the dark and dulls concentration and slows reaction time. Crashes are more common at night with a disproportionate number of fatal accidents happening after dark. The National Safety Council (NSC) calls driving in the dark “the most dangerous time to drive,” listing additional factors such as rush hour driving, impaired driving, and particularly poor vision for elderly drivers. With the many added concerns of night time roadways, effective traffic calming becomes more imperative than ever to protect drivers and pedestrians from accidents and injuries. Improving Nighttime Safety Safer night roads begin with well-engineered roads that are designed to protect motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists and keep traffic moving at a safe pace. Traffic Logix Releases New SafePace Beacon System

SafePace Beacon System

Traffic Logix recently released the new SafePace Beacon System, a standalone flashing beacon solution. Previously, the flashing beacons were only available as part of the full SafePace school zone system. The new beacons can be used to notify drivers of changing road conditions in school zones, work zones, prior to a steep hill or sudden curve, or anytime you need to alert drivers.

The flashing beacons are available in a choice of amber (yellow) or red and include a unique design that houses all of the solution components in one enclosure for a more streamlined solution.
